Walking with Love, alternatives and responses to abortion

ABORTION GRIEF? NEED HELP?

This is a grief that the sufferer relates to a connection with a foetus.  E.g. "Some women suffer grief after abortion as they struggle to come to terms with the loss of their unborn child."

You are not alone.  There are counsellors and ministries that can bring healing and peace back into your life. Rachel’s Vineyard is a ministry which offers a healing process for those who have been hurt by abortion. This includes men, family members and friends. Here Jesus comes to the broken-hearted and heals them. There are Catholic and interdenominational forms of Rachel's Vineyard but even with women that have no faith, they find healing in the process. Theological aspects of post-abortion healing.

Post abortion counselling is available.

New evidence (from Major B et al., 2000 "Psychological responses of women after first-trimester abortion" in Archives of General Psychiatry, 2000; Vol 57:777-784) shows that 10-20% of them suffer negative psychological complications that may continue for years. Large studies have found that women who have had abortions can suffer from more psychiatric problems than those who have not had abortions. Post abortion grief trauma is a delayed grief that may be difficult to diagnose.

If you are a friend or family member, learn how to be more supportive of those suffering from the abortion experience:

Always be careful how you present your views about abortion with even your closest circle of friends. Most women keep their abortions a secret, out of feelings of guilt or shame. Hearing words of judgement and condemnation further isolate a women in her experience. Instead you can say things like:
Innocent"I've learned a lot more about the reasons why women have abortions; sometimes women have so many pressures they simply see no other way out."

Acknowledge her feelings of loss and grief:
Innocent"it must be very hard for you to have been grieving this loss by yourself for so long."
